Greater Tortue Ahmeyim wins Gas Monetization Strategy of the Year at African Energy Week 2025

The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project has received the Gas Monetization Strategy of the Year award at African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025. The recognition highlights the project’s role in transforming the MSGBC Basin into a key LNG hub.
This honor came after GTA achieved first gas and commercial operations in 2025. It also marked the start of LNG exports from Mauritania and Senegal. The project provides a scalable model for other gas developments across Africa.
A groundbreaking LNG project
GTA sits on the maritime border between Mauritania and Senegal. It is one of Africa’s deepest offshore gas fields, holding more than 15 trillion cubic feet of reserves. bp operates the project with Kosmos Energy, Mauritania’s SMH, and Senegal’s Petrosen as partners.
Gas started flowing in January 2025. By June, the project reached commercial operations. LNG exports began from the Gimi FLNG vessel, which Golar LNG developed and operates under a 20-year contract.

So far, 11 LNG cargoes have been shipped. One more condensate cargo is expected soon. Phase 1 aims to produce 2.3 million tons of LNG per year. Future phases will increase output even more.
The project uses a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel to process gas. Purified gas then travels by pipeline to the Gimi FLNG, where it is cooled, liquefied, and stored for export. This modular design can be adapted to future gas discoveries in the MSGBC region.
Economic growth through collaboration
The GTA project shows how strong partnerships and smart engineering can drive success. The gas will supply both domestic and international markets. This will support industrial growth, improve energy security, and create economic opportunities in Mauritania and Senegal.
Thousands of jobs have already been created. The project has also set new standards for regional cooperation and local participation.
“The GTA project demonstrates how regional collaboration, private investment and technical excellence can turn vast gas reserves into shared prosperity for generations to come,” said NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.
