PH sets Guinness World Record for Most People Planting Bamboo simultaneously
On October 18, 2024, the Philippines made history by setting a Guinness World Record for the “Most People Planting Bamboo Simultaneously Across Multiple Venues.” This monumental achievement, recognized during the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) 2024 at Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City, reflects the nation’s dedication to reforestation, environmental protection, and climate action.
Organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in collaboration with Kilambay Plantation Corporation (KPC), this effort brought together 2,305 participants from various regions of Mindanao. The planting activity, dubbed “Kawayanihan,” symbolized a unified commitment to combating climate change and promoting a circular economy.
Partners in Green Advocacy
KPC, led by Chief Operating Officer Rochella “Ella” Taliño Taray, was honored with a plaque of recognition for its critical role in the initiative. In partnership with the Erumanen ne Menuvu tribe, KPC facilitated the bamboo planting in Carmen, Cotabato. KPC’s CEO, Jerry John Taray, expressed hope that the initiative inspires more individuals to take part in reforestation efforts.
“This Guinness World Record is just the beginning. Bamboo planting not only heals nature but also provides sustainable livelihoods for indigenous communities,” Taray shared.
A Step Towards a Greener Future
The DOST’s Kawayanihan Circular Economy Movement underscores the importance of bamboo as a solution to environmental issues. Beyond reforestation, bamboo supports biodiversity, soil stability, and sustainable economic opportunities for local communities. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr., alongside other officials, emphasized the movement’s significance during the NSTW celebration.
As the Philippines sets this record, the initiative serves as a rallying cry for global participation in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices.
