Gilas Pilipinas: Tim Cone named head coach for SEA Games

Barangay Ginebra head coach and PBA’s winningest mentor Tim Cone will call the shots for Gilas Pilipinas Men in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games that will be hosted by the Philippines in November.
The announcement was made by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio per a report by ABS-CBN News.

Said Panlilio per ABS-CBN News:

“I spoke to Tim Cone last Saturday and he expressed interested but wanted to finish his game last night and talk to his family first.

Now I’m very happy to announce that coach Tim has officially accepted the role as head coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men in the upcoming SEA Games.”

Cone takes over from Yeng Guiao, who resigned after a disappointing stint by the nationals in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Cone was the head coach of the RP Centennial Team back in 1998, which took home the Jones Cup trophy.

Back in the scene after 21 years, the much-adored Ginebra mentor will potentially coach the likes of Christian Standhardinger, Stanley Pringle, and Thirdy Ravena – players who are currently part of the pool for the SEA Games.

Cone earlier told the PBA website that it would be an honor to coach the senior national team again.

“I mean, what a tremendous honor that would be but I have absolutely no control, I don’t want any control of that. I just want to focus on helping what I can and what I can help right now is just to be the SEA Games coach in basketball.”
