Gilas Pilipinas: Gomez De Liaño brothers lead sweep of Thailand

Gilas Pilipinas leaned on its hot outside shooting to repulse Thailand anew, 93-69 on Friday and sweep their second window campaign in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers Monday in Manama, Bahrain.

Brothers Juan and Javi Gomez de Liaño led the nationals’ superb touch from 3-point land. The team shot 48% from deep.

Javi led Gilas scorers with 19 points on 7/8 shooting, and 4/4 from the 3-point area.

Unlike their first meeting where the Philippines figured in a close battle early on, this time, Gilas went on an 11-0 start to dictate control.

The squad went on to hit 10 1st half triples to establish a commanding 53-34 lead. Juan had 3 outside connections in the 1st half. He finished with 14 points overall.

Later, Juan continued the momentum for the Philippines particularly in the 4th quarter where he knocked down 3 straight treys as well.

Dwight Ramos and Matt Nieto also provided support, adding 13 and 12 markers, respectively to the balanced scoring for coach Jong Uichico.

The game also saw reigning NCAA MVP CJ Oftana of San Beda play, chipping in 9 points.

Chanatip Jakrawan led Thailand with a remarkable 34-point, 12-rebound performance on 12/19 shooting.
