Gilas Pilipinas: Mix of rookies, veterans for FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers
The Gilas Pilipinas men’s national basketball team will be parading a mix of rookies and veterans for the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers which tip off next month.
The Philippines is expected to have Isaac Go, Allyn Bulanadi, Rey Suerte, Mike Nieto, and Matt Nieto – PBA rookie draftees loaned to the national team – in the line-up, according to a report by the Philippine Star.
Ateneo’s Thirdy Ravena is also expected to be part of the squad which shall then be reinforced by PBA pros.
The Philippines is grouped with Indonesia, Thailand, and nemesis Korea in the qualifiers, wherein only the top 3 teams per group advance to the continental showpiece next year.
Citing Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President Al Panlilio, the Star also reported that naturalized player Andray Blatche will not be part of the team anymore.
The ex-NBA player has served the nationals since 2014.
The full roster shall be unveiled by the SBP soon.
