FIBA rankings: Gilas Pilipinas fails to enter 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments
Gilas Pilipinas Men’s hopes of making the 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been shot down after FIBA released its latest rankings a few days after the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
Although the Philippines maintained its spot at no. 31, its chief rival Korea has risen 2 spots to ultimately overtake Gilas at no. 30.
Because of that, China and Korea will complete the cast of Asia-Oceania squads eligible for the 4 Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in early 2020.
FIBA selected 24 teams for the OQTs, including the 16-best placed teams in the World Cup outside of outright Olympic spot winners.
The last 8 countries were selected based on a country’s rank in its region. Two were chosen in each of the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia-Oceania.
The United States maintained pole position although Spain has closed in at no. 2. Australia is a big winner, rising 8 spots to no. 3 and overtaking powerhouse countries like Serbia, Argentina, and France.
Already qualified for the Olympics are the United States, Argentina, Spain, France, Australia, Nigeria, Iran, and host team Japan.
