‘Star Wars’ TV Series Plans Not Happening For Now
Fans of the “Star Wars” who are hoping that the franchise will also extend to television might be disappointed to know that a TV show is unlikely happening as a Disney insider revealed the studio isn’t working on it.
Back in 2005, Lucasfilm announced plans to develop a live-action “Star Wars” TV series called “Underworld” and scripts have been prepared to begin production. But Lucasfilm sold “Star Wars” to Disney a few years later, affecting plans for the TV show.
According to TV Line , Disney looked into the scripts for “Underworld,” to possibly debut this in 2017, perhaps possible on Netflix. But the studio decided against pushing through with the series. The source cited it’s smarter for Disney not to do one. “They’re looking to avoid the Marvel-ization of the franchise,” said the source.
“Our current focus for TV is on animation [Star Wars Rebels, etc.],” confirmed ABC President Paul Lee. ABC is the TV arm of Disney. In the meantime, “Star Wars Rebels,” the animation series, is currently in development for its second season. It airs on the Disney Channel.
