Sony brings cutting-edge technology to World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025
Sony has officially partnered with the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 2025, set to take place from September 13 to 21 at Japan National Stadium. The company will provide its latest technology to enhance how fans, journalists, and athletes experience the event, from live broadcasting innovations to athlete-focused content creation tools.
Sony’s extensive lineup of products will play a central role in capturing the action on the track and field. These include Alpha mirrorless cameras with G Master lenses, high-speed data transmitters for instant content sharing, system cameras, and professional broadcasting solutions. With these technologies, photographers and videographers can document athletes’ performances in greater detail and bring the excitement of competition to audiences worldwide.

Developing the next generation of sports storytellers
Through its partnership with the World Athletics Media Academy, Sony will support a workshop for 11 emerging photographers from around the globe. These young creators will receive guidance from top sports photographers and gain access to hands-on shooting opportunities inside the stadium. The initiative aims to sharpen their storytelling skills and inspire new ways of presenting athletics through fresh perspectives. By nurturing talent, Sony seeks to contribute to the growth of sports journalism for years to come.
Enhancing fairness and professional support
Hawk-Eye Innovations, a Sony group company, will provide video replay officiating support for all events during the competition. The system will supply judges with camera angles from multiple positions to ensure fair and accurate decisions. In cases of disqualification, the reviewed footage and related graphics will also be shared with broadcasters to give viewers clear insight into the ruling.
In addition, Sony will operate a Camera Service Booth at the Media Centre, offering support to accredited photographers covering the championships. With over 150 cameras and 600 lenses available, along with expert engineers and support staff, Sony will ensure photographers can capture world-class moments without disruption. This also gives Sony valuable real-time feedback from professionals to inform future product development.
Beyond professional services, Sony will also run a social contribution program in collaboration with Project KIBO, led by former Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai. A group of children and their guardians will be invited to experience the championships, explore Sony’s technology, and even try hands-on sports photography with Alpha cameras.
