‘Punky Brewster’ Sequel Planned With Soleil Moon Frye
The 1980s sitcom about a foster child, “Punky Brewster,” is getting a sequel with its original star Soleil Moon Frye. The actress will be serving as executive producer together with the show creator David Duclon.
According to reports, Universal Content Productions is spearheading the project to bring back the show with writers Steve and Jim Armogida. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Punky Brewster reboot will focus on the character as a single mother of three who meets a young girl that will remind her of who her past.
The sequel will also carry the same title, as per TV Guide. A network has not yet been attached to the project as of press time.
“Punky Brewster” aired on NBC from 1984 to 1988. It starred Frye as the homeless girl living with her foster father, an elderly widow named Henry Warnimont (played by Gorge Gaynes).
The series also starred Cherie Johnson as Punky’s best friend and her grandmother Betty (played by Susie Garret). The show dealt with the foster and adoption process, red tape in the government and social worker issues. In the latter part of the series, Henry became her legally adopted parent.
“Punky Brewster” received Emmy nominations during its run, including citations as best children’s program. After it was canceled, “Punky Brewster” became an animated series and aired for two seasons.
It launched the career of Frye as an actress, where she also appeared on shows like “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Friends,” and “Robot Chicken.”
