Retro Gaming Goes Vertical With 8BitDo’s New FlipPad

Every mobile controller on the market wants to turn your phone into something else. The 8BitDo FlipPad, now shipping across Europe through independent distributor Game Outlet Europe, is built on the opposite bet.

Instead of clamping a phone sideways into a chunky landscape grip, the FlipPad hangs off the bottom of the handset and folds up over the screen like the receiver of an old flip phone. Games are played in portrait, the way the earliest handhelds were, and the whole thing costs €29.99 / £24.99.

Why Portrait Play Changes Everything

The layout is the pitch. A refined D-pad sits on the left, ABXY action buttons on the right, and the vertical arrangement leaves the upper half of the screen free for the game itself.

That shape is a deliberate fit for a specific library. Emulated titles from the NES, Game Boy, SNES and Genesis era were built for a 4:3 frame, and so were plenty of vertical arcade shooters and modern controller-supported mobile games. Anything designed widescreen isn’t the target here, and the FlipPad makes no pretense otherwise.

The buttons carry the signature 8BitDo attention to detail. Presses land clicky, light and precise — exactly what touchscreen controls can’t deliver on a pixel-perfect platformer or a bullet-hell run.

Built for Pockets, Not Bags

Connection is where the FlipPad separates itself from the crowd. It plugs directly into the phone’s USB-C port for a wired link, sidestepping the lag and dropouts that plague wireless mobile controllers, and 8BitDo rates that port for more than 10,000 insertions.

There’s no battery inside, and that’s a feature rather than an omission. Nothing to charge means nothing to forget, and the compact footprint means the controller travels in a pocket instead of a bag. It also works with the majority of phone cases, so setup takes seconds.

Then there’s the hinge, which quietly solves the reason most people abandon mobile controllers. Clamp a phone into a grip and every incoming call becomes an unclamping exercise, but the FlipPad simply flips open mid-game so the call or message can be handled without unplugging anything. The mechanism is tested to 6,000 open/close cycles.

One caveat is worth checking before buying. The FlipPad requires Apple iOS 26.2 or later, or Android 13.0 or later — a steep floor on the iPhone side.
