Feel Good Pop: VIBY Unleash ‘Gotcha’ Before Budokan Night
VIBY have turned a chance meeting into a summer anthem. ‘Gotcha’, the group’s new dance single, is a thank-you letter set to a beat, and it lands just weeks before the biggest night of their young career.
The Japanese group play Nippon Budokan on 31 August for a debut showcase titled ‘VIBY LAND’. ‘Gotcha’ is written for TOMO, the fan community that has followed them since before their first release. It is bright, breezy and built to be sung straight back at them.
The sound has a name, too. VIBY call it ‘Feel Good Pop’ — catchy melodies, a light rhythm, refreshing guitar tones and polished synths. Nothing here is designed to feel heavy.
A Chance Encounter Turned Fate
The title works two ways at once. In English, ‘gotcha’ is shorthand for ‘I found you’. In Japan, the word also nods to gachapon, the capsule toy machines where a coin buys a small surprise.
That is the trick at the heart of the track. A random pull somehow becomes the exact thing you were hoping for. VIBY frame their meeting with TOMO the same way, treating luck as something closer to destiny.
The anchor lyric is simple enough to travel anywhere. ‘I finally found you, out of everyone,’ the group sing. It is a fan song, but it lands like a love song.
Inside the ‘VIBY LAND’ Story
The music video was shot at an amusement park in Hokkaido, redressed for the occasion as ‘VIBY LAND’. At the park’s opening event, the members set off on a mission to find a missing puppy called TOMO.
The search turns into a meeting, and the meeting turns into a promise: friends, forever from now on. The video ends warm rather than grand, which suits the song.
That story does not stop when the video does. ‘VIBY LAND’ is also the name of the Budokan showcase, which makes ‘Gotcha’ an opening chapter rather than a standalone single. Expect it to be one of the night’s loudest moments.
Leader IO framed the release as a message first and a song second. ‘It’s our way of saying thank you, for finding each of you, and for the five of us finding each other as a group,’ he said. He added that the track is ‘the beginning of the story’ that leads into the Budokan showcase.
Everyone remembers the artist who arrived at exactly the right moment. ‘Gotcha’ is a song about being on the other side of that discovery. For VIBY, the encounter was TOMO — and if you are meeting them here for the first time, that is rather the point.
