Gilas Pilipinas: Dwight Ramos stars in 32-point win over Thailand
Young star Dwight Ramos scored 20 points as Gilas Pilipinas convincingly beat Thailand, 93-61 in their 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers match on Friday in Bahrain.
The Philippines used a 32-10 2nd quarter behind the combined efforts of Ramos, Juan Gomez de Liano, and Kobe Paras to break the game wide open.
It was a close opening period where Gilas only led by 2, 21-19 before upping their defense in the next frame enabled them to pull away.
Ramos shot a perfect 7/7 from the field and added 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Juan and Justine Baltazar both scored 12 points.
Gilas shot a scintillating 59.5% from the field, outworking and outrunning their Thai counterparts. The team also had 9 steals overall.
Coach Jong Uichico’s high-paced game also exposed Thailand’s thin 10-man rotation.
The Philippines now holds a 2-0 record in their group, tying Korea which holds an identical slate.
The top 2 teams per group advance outright to the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup, the top-flight competition which decides an Asian basketball champion every 4 years.
