‘The Old Guard’ Sequel News: Cast, Director Share Exciting Prospect for Part 2
Netflix’s new action movie “The Old Guard” is currently raking streaming records following its release this July. The film, which stars Charlize Theron and Chiwetel Ejiofor, has set up a curious ending that indicates a potential sequel, and Ejiofor, his co-star Harry Melling, and director Gina Prince-Bythewood explained the possibility of part 2.
Speaking with Radio Times, Ejiofor said that there’s definitely still more stories to tell for “The Old Guards.”
“The central characters and central idea are so fascinating, and can occupy all sorts of different times and periods and ideas,” he said.
Melling also agreed that the theme of the movie is quite huge and has the potential for heading to different stories.
“There’s so many avenues you can go down and the characters are so fascinating. I really hope it has more to go,” Melling said.
The director, on the other hand, said in an interview with Polygon that she has a couple of other projects already lined up but if a sequel should be greenlit, then her schedule has to be worked out. Prince-Bythewood said that she’d love to return to direct because she loves the character and the cast.
However, Prince-Bythewood also said that a sequel is really up to the audience’s response. While the film was planned as a trilogy, Netflix could greenlight the second installment if it gets a lot of viewership on the platform.
This early, Prince-Bythewood has an idea for the second film.
“In the graphic novel there’s a very grounded story tackling a problem within the world, which again brings more villains that are not with the conceit of immortality,” the director said. “So there’s actually a really cool balance between those two.”
“The Old Guards” is a dark superhero film that was adapted by Greg Rucka. It features strong women like Theron and Kiki Layne’s character and it also touches on an LGBT pairing.
