Basketball: MPBL cancelled until 2021
There will be no Chooks-to-Go Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) action until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
An online source reported that the MPBL has confirmed the league will not push through with its 2020-2021 season.
Contact sports are still not allowed in the Philippines until a vaccine for COVID-19 has been discovered or a “new normal” has been reached, according to the guidelines of the government.
Until recently, the MPBL was seeking ways to finish what is left of its Lakan season wherein the league is already in the semi-finals.
But it seems commissioner Kenneth Duremdes has put premium on overall safety of the league’s players, staff, and fans.
Major sporting events around the world, including the NBA, 2020 Olympics, and Wimbledon have been cancelled due to the pandemic.
The 2020-2021 season will instead open on June 12, 2021 and shall likely be shortened.
