Metro Manila lockdown: 20 SM Stores close temporarily amid COVID-19

Twenty branches of SM Stores, the department stores of SM Supermalls, have closed temporarily to comply with Metro Manila’s community quarantine measures amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Philippines.

Included in the list of department stores that closed starting March 16 are the ones in Mall of Asia, Megamall, Southmall, Aura, and Manila, some of the biggest malls in the country.

In an announcement, SM Supermalls noted the safety of both customers and employees are important.

Authorities have earlier suggested that malls be completely closed, except for supermarkets and groceries. Banks likewise would remain operational.

Coronavirus cases in the Philippines have shot up to 140 as of Monday, March 16. There have been 12 deaths recorded related to the illness.
