SEA Games 2019: MVPs Bernardino, Animam propel Gilas Women past Malaysia
Gilas Pilipinas Women kept their gold medal hopes alive after a pulsating 81-75 win over Malaysia in the women’s basketball tournament of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Sunday at the MOA Arena in Manila.
Behind the dazzling performances of Afril Bernardino and Jack Animam, the Philippines stayed unbeaten at 2-0 and shall face Thailand on Tuesday shooting for their inaugural gold medal in the regional meet.
Bernardino had 18 points, 19 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks while Animam had 14 points and 11 boards.
Khate Castillo and Janine Pontejos, meanwhile, added 11 and 10 markers, respectively, hitting key shots towards the end of the game.
Gilas first led by 10 in the 3rd quarter, 52-42 but it was quickly erased by the defending champions.
Later, Malaysia went up by 6, 74-68 before Castillo knocked down 2 huge triples to tie it.
Free throws by Danica Jose and Pontejos followed by a one-hander from Pontejos made it 79-74 as Gilas prevailed in the end.
