FIBA Asia 3×3: Philippines women wins historic U18 bronze
The Gilas Pilipinas women’s youth national 3×3 team won a historic bronze medal at the 2019 FIBA 3×3 U18 Asia Cup in Malaysia after beating China, 14-11 on Saturday.
The squad composed of Camille Clarin, Ella Fajardo, Angel Surada, and Kristine Cayabyab finished strong in the 3rd place game, and avenged an earlier 16-14 loss to the same nation in the Pool Stages.
Cayabyab and Clarin gave the Philippines a slight 12-10 cushion in the dying minutes before a foul whistled on China with the Philippines in the bonus led to two more free throws for Clarin which sealed the win.
The Philippines beat Malaysia, 19-8 in the Pool Stages to advance to the quarter-finals, where they stunned New Zealand, 11-9.
The nationals only lost to eventual champions Australia, 15-12 in the semi-finals which set up the battle for the bronze.
It was the 1st podium finish of any 3×3 women’s team in FIBA 3×3 tournaments.
