LOTR: War in the North Gets a Brutal Second Life on PS5
Fifteen years after its original release, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is getting a brutal second life on modern consoles. The darker Middle-earth adventure is returning as a physical Legacy Edition for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox.
Originally released in 2011, the action RPG offered a different look at J.R.R. Tolkien’s world. Instead of following Frodo and Samwise directly, players fought a parallel war against Sauron’s forces in the North.

Limited Run Games is bringing the Legacy Edition to a new generation with physical Standard and Deluxe editions. Pre-orders are now open and will remain available until December 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
A Brutal War Beyond Mordor
Developed by Snowblind Studios and adapted for the Legacy Edition by Aspyr, War in the North follows three heroes fighting to protect Middle-earth. Their story unfolds while Frodo and Samwise continue their journey toward Mount Doom.
The threat comes from Agandaûr, a Black Númenórean serving Sauron. He has assembled a powerful force in the ruins of Fornost, forcing a new Fellowship to rise and defend the North.
Players can control Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; or Farin, a Dwarven Champion. Each character brings a different combat style, including ranged attacks, magic, healing and devastating melee strikes.
The game supports solo play as well as cooperative multiplayer. Players can join forces online or through split-screen co-op while working together to survive the campaign.
Physical Edition Packs Collector Extras
The Legacy Edition features physical releases for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox. The Standard Edition costs $49.99 and includes the game, an O-Ring slipcover and an eight-page booklet.
The booklet, titled “A Wayfinder’s Ledger,” features riddles from the game and the official riddles for the “Riddles in the Dark” activation. The physical release is designed to give longtime fans a tangible return to Middle-earth.
The Deluxe Edition costs $79.99 and adds several collector-focused extras. It includes a SteelCase, a full-color cloth map and an exclusive letter written by actor Jed Brophy.
The letter is printed on weathered-looking paper and closed with a wax seal sticker. Both editions also include the physical version of the game on disc or game card, depending on the platform.
Beyond its combat, War in the North features deep RPG progression and character customization. Players can develop skills, abilities and gear while collecting weapons and armor to create their preferred playstyle.
The game also takes a darker approach to Tolkien’s world, with mature storytelling and violent battles. Its Legacy Edition gives modern players another chance to experience the lesser-known conflict that unfolded alongside the events of The Lord of the Rings.
Limited Run Games opened pre-orders for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition on October 7, 2026. Pre-orders close December 13, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET.
