Russell Crowe has paid tribute to mathematician John Nash and his wife Alicia Nash after they were killed in a car crash on Saturday evening .

The 51-year-old actor starred in the 2001 Oscar-winning film ‘A Beautiful Mind’, which was inspired by the 86-year-old mathematician who died in an accident at the New Jersey Turnpike.

Writing on Twitter, Russell said: “Stunned…my heart goes out to John & Alicia & family. An amazing partnership. Beautiful minds, beautiful hearts. (sic)”

The Nobel Prize-winning star and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which saw the taxi they were riding in lose control and collide with a guard rail and another vehicle.

The Ron Howard-directed biographical drama film was inspired by a 1998 book of the same name by Sylvia Nasar.

The movie – which saw Russell star alongside the likes of Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Paul Bettany and Adam Goldberg – won four Academy Awards, for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress, while it was also nominated for Best Actor, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup, and Best Original Score.
