Landslide at Cebu landfill leaves one dead, five injured

At least one person was killed and five others injured after a landslide struck a landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, on Thursday, January 8, afternoon, local media reported.

The collapse occurred as heavy rainfall in the past several days saturated the soil, weakening the ground beneath the landfill. Authorities said the sheer volume of accumulated waste contributed to the destabilization of the site.

Rescue efforts underway

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist those trapped under debris. Five injured individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment, according to Dave Tumulak, chairperson of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The affected area has been cordoned off while search and rescue operations continue. Officials warned that unstable soil could pose further risks to personnel and residents in the vicinity.

Safety measures and ongoing monitoring

Authorities are closely monitoring the site and have urged residents to stay clear of the landfill while operations are underway. Investigators are also assessing the structural stability of nearby areas to prevent additional incidents.

The landslide highlights the challenges of managing large-scale waste sites, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Local officials said long-term measures will be needed to secure landfills and protect surrounding communities.
