‘No-Brainer’: Simpson Urges Man Utd to Sign Lewis Hall

Manchester United should be prepared to spend up to £80 million on Lewis Hall, according to former United defender Danny Simpson. The ex-Leicester City title winner believes the young England international could become United’s long-term left-back.

He also thinks Hall could help the club challenge for the Premier League title.

“Lewis Hall has been one that’s been lingering and the boy wants to come,” Simpson said. “For £70-80 million, whatever the price, I think United should get him.”

It’s worth noting: the £70 million to £80 million figure is Simpson’s own suggested range and reflects his personal opinion. It is not a confirmed transfer fee, an official Newcastle asking price, or a figure reported by either club.

Some reports this year have put a realistic figure closer to £75 million-plus, but no fee has been agreed or made public.

Lewis Hall Could Be Man Utd’s Long-Term Left-Back

Simpson’s strongest argument centres on what Hall could offer over the long term. He compared a potential signing with United’s decision to bring Luke Shaw to Old Trafford from Southampton in 2014.

“It’s similar to when United signed Luke Shaw from Southampton,” Simpson said. “He could be United’s left-back for the next 10 years.”

That projection is Simpson’s own prediction, not a certainty. Plenty of young full-backs tipped for a decade at a club don’t work out that way.

It’s presented here as his opinion rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Simpson also argued United need a second recognised left-back given the physical demands on Shaw. He suggested Shaw could manage his workload playing once a week, but might struggle with two games a week.

“Luke Shaw could manage his load last season playing just one game a week, but playing two games a week I think he will struggle,” Simpson said. “We saw it on the weekend against Hull, with defensive errors.”

This is Simpson’s interpretation of that performance. The defensive errors in United’s opening-weekend loss to Hull City were not officially attributed to Shaw specifically by the club or match officials.

Other pundits and outlets offered different explanations for the result.

“United definitely need a left-back if they are going to challenge for the league,” he said.

Why Simpson Calls the Hall Deal a ‘No-Brainer’

Hall’s profile is central to Simpson’s recommendation: his age, his English background and his Premier League experience.

Simpson pointed to Sir Alex Ferguson’s recruitment approach as a benchmark, and the value of signing players already proven in English football.

“Sir Alex Ferguson would always buy Premier League-proven players,” Simpson told LiveFootballTickets. “United need to continue going back to that.”

He cited Youri Tielemans, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha as recent examples of that approach. All three joined United in 2025 or 2026 having already established themselves in the Premier League.

“I think it’s very important to get that deal done,” Simpson said. “It’s a good deal for all parties in my eyes.”

That is why Simpson considers a potential £70 million to £80 million investment a “no-brainer.” It’s a personal view based on Hall’s age, Premier League pedigree and what Simpson sees as long-term potential at left-back.
