Netflix to Make Quarantine Series ‘Social Distance’ with ‘OITNB’ Creator Jenji Kohan
Netflix is bringing a new show inspired by the coronavirus pandemic quarantine. “Social Distance” will be created by the same team behind “Orange Is the New Black” (OINTB).
Jenji Kohan, the producer of OINTB is going to work alongside Tara Herrmann, Blake McCormick, Hilary Weisman Graham and Diego Velasco. The latter will serve as the director, who also directed OINTB before. Graham, on the other hand, will be the showrunner.
“Our job as storytellers is to reflect reality, and in this new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing, we feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance. We’ve been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through — the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together,” read the statement from the people behind the series.
“The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same. Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time. And we hope that Social Distance will help people feel close to one another.”
The creative team behind Orange Is the New Black have created Social Distance, a new anthology series about the experience of living in social distance. The series will be scripted and shot with crews working remotely and talent will film themselves.

“Social Distance” will be an anthology. Per The Hollywood Reporter, it will be a short form drama exploring life in quarantine during a pandemic. As such, the series will have different characters and story per episode. The episodes will be shot “found-footage” style.
Netflix has not yet given the full details of the cast and release date. Kohan is also the creator of another Netflix show, “GLOW.”
“Social Distance” joins other shows that are being produced entirely while the cast and crew are in quarantine. The CBS legal drama “All Rise” will have one episode in May going on the same premise. The cast of “Parks and Recreations will also reunite for a special quarantine fundraiser episode.
