Spotify Down Right Now? Massive Outage Silences Music Across U.S.
Spotify stumbled for listeners worldwide Tuesday morning, Sept. 29, as an outage left users in 173 countries struggling to open the app or stream music. Problem reports surged and then began to ease by late morning.
Luke Kehoe, lead analyst at Ookla, which owns outage tracker Downdetector, told Forbes the site logged more than 200,000 reports worldwide by 11:15 a.m. EDT. The U.S. accounted for about 46% of them, topping 100,000.
Spotify Outage Reports Spike to 3,000 Per Minute Across 173 Countries
Reports began to spike around 9:45 a.m. EDT and peaked near 10:41 a.m., when Downdetector recorded about 3,000 per minute, compared with roughly 2 on a normal day. An hour later, the rate had dropped to about 2,300 per minute.
Complaints came from users on every major U.S. mobile and home broadband provider, which points away from a single carrier. The geographic spread was wide, with reports arriving from 173 countries.
Spotify Not Working: What Users Reported and What the Company Said
Most users, about 58% as of 11:15 a.m. EDT, reported problems with the app itself, while another 21% said they couldn’t stream audio. The percentages reflect what users chose to report, not a confirmed count of affected accounts.
Spotify acknowledged the trouble on its official status page and on X, saying it was aware of “some issues” and checking them out. The company had not explained the cause in those initial statements.
Reuters reported that U.S. user-reported problems fell to about 1,000 from a peak above 19,000 as Spotify recovered from the brief disruption. Downdetector’s numbers are based on user reports, and actual impact may vary.
Anthropic’s Claude also suffered a brief outage Tuesday, with reports topping 10,000 around 10:25 a.m. EDT before dropping below 100. A company spokesperson said the issues had been mitigated. No link between the two outages has been reported.
