Iran says peace deal with U.S. set for June 19
Iran has announced that a peace memorandum of understanding with the United States is expected to be signed later this week, potentially marking a significant development in efforts to ease tensions between the two countries.
According to Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi, the finalized draft of the agreement is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on June 19. The announcement was reported by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Gharibabadi said the agreement would include the lifting of what he described as a U.S. naval blockade against Iran and the immediate and permanent end of military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
The reported development comes amid ongoing international attention on regional security, maritime trade routes and efforts to address long-standing disputes involving Iran’s nuclear program and economic sanctions.
Nuclear Talks Linked
According to Tasnim, Iran’s participation in a proposed 60-day negotiation period with the United States on its nuclear program will depend on Washington fulfilling a series of preliminary commitments.
Iranian officials indicated that those commitments would be subject to verification by Tehran before the scheduled signing ceremony in Switzerland. The negotiations are also expected to focus on the possible removal of sanctions that have affected Iran’s economy for years.
Iran’s state-run IRIB television also cited Gharibabadi as saying that progress toward formal talks would be conditional on the United States meeting agreed-upon obligations before any new phase of negotiations begins.
The proposed discussions could represent one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between the two countries in recent years if the reported framework moves forward as planned.
Strait Of Hormuz Reopening
Tasnim also quoted a source as saying that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the signing ceremony.
The strategic waterway is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, serving as a key passage for global oil and natural gas shipments. Any developments affecting navigation through the strait are closely monitored by governments, energy markets and international businesses.
While Iranian officials outlined an ambitious timetable for the agreement, details regarding the contents of the memorandum and the specific commitments expected from both sides were not immediately disclosed.
The United States has not publicly confirmed the reported agreement or the timeline described by Iranian officials.
If finalized, the memorandum could pave the way for broader diplomatic discussions involving sanctions relief, regional security issues and the future of Iran’s nuclear program, while potentially reducing tensions in one of the world’s most strategically important regions. [Xinhua]
