Gilas Pilipinas: Alapag ‘ready’ to coach if given chance

Jimmy Alapag has no plans of stopping serving the country.

If given an opportunity to be the head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas Men national basketball team, the legendary point guard said he will be “ready” for the role, according to a recent report.

Per Richard Dy of ESPN5:

“I would be ready. I think that job (offers a) unique opportunity, but it also comes with a huge, huge responsibility.

We all know how passionate we are for the game of basketball. But just as every other 99.9 percent Filipinos, I share that same passion.”

Alapag has been a long-time member of the national team.

He’s played since 2007 and is best known for leading the squad to a silver medal finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship and being captain of the squad in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Gilas’ head coaching position has been vacant for a few weeks now after incumbent head coach Yeng Guiao resigned.

Alapag is a current assistant coach for the San Miguel Beermen. He also steered Alab Pilipinas to an ASEAN Basketball League title.
