IM Angelo Young bags gold in inaugural Hampton Gardens Chess tilt

Eight-time Illinois USA Champion (IM) International Master Angelo Young flashed his old deadly form after claiming the gold on board one in the 1st Hampton Gardens Chess Team Tournament was held at the Hampton Gardens, 100 C. Raymundo Avenue, Maybunga, Pasig City on Sunday.

The 1982 Philippine Junior Champion and 1982 Asian Junior third placer won the gold medal with undefeated record 6.5 points on six wins and a draw in seven outings.

“I’m very happy to win again in Board 1, especially in an tough tournament like this.” said the 55-years-old Young, the country’s representative in this year’s World Seniors Chess Championship to be held on November 11 to 24 in Bucharest, Romania.

However, Young’s Pasig Team 1 placed 17th overall with 8 match points in this one-day rapid tournament organized by Pasig City Chess Association headed by it’s president Noli S. Cruz and chairman Jeifreyson M. Grande which attracted 40 teams and 120 chess players.

Other member’s of Young’s Pasig Team 1 are Christopher Megino and Paul Josef Alcodia.

Team Caniogan spearheaded by Vince Angelo Medina, Marguel Soria and Jaime “Kuting” Criste notch 12 match points to win the 7 Round Swiss-tournament and receive the top prize of P30,000 and a trophy.

Team Quantum Zero B led by Jayson Esparagoza, Jan Roldan Oriendo and Rommel Llavanes placed second with a superior tie break against fellow 11 match points 3rd placer Pasig Team 4 bannered by Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., Genghis Katipunan Imperial and Patrick Bonifacio.

Team Quantum Zero B pocketed P20,000 plus a medals while Pasig Team 4 bring home P10,000 plus a medals for their efforts.

No less than Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna led the opening rites.
