AFC Cup: Kaya FC-Iloilo salvages draw on late Angeles goal

By Kevin Sox

It wasn’t an ideal showing but a stoppage time goal pushed Kaya FC-Iloilo to a draw against Indonesian side PSM Makassar, 1-1 in the continuing AFC Cup 2019 on Monday at the Pakansari Stadium in West Java.

Midfielder Marwin Angeles slotted in the goal off an assist by Jovin Bedic in the 93rd minute, enabling the defending Copa Paulino Alcantara champions to earn an extra point in Group H.

Kaya remained in first place in spite of their second draw in the group stages as they collected five points in their first three matches.

Both Kaya and PSM Makassar currently have five points halfway into their group stage battles although Kaya has the better goal difference.

After a scoreless first half, Erro Markkanen converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute, pushing the home side ahead.

Markkanen earned the penalty after Camelo Tacusalme was booked with a yellow card.

Although PSM generally had more of the possessions throughout the match and earned more corners, Kaya never relented.

The Filipino club had more shots and had two more attempts on goal than the Indonesian crew.

A rematch is slated for both teams on April 17 at the Panaad Stadium before Kaya rounds out its schedule against Lao Toyota on April 30 and Home United on May 14.
