UAAP football: DLSU-Ateneo derby up
Matches today: (FEU-Diliman)
1 p.m. – AdU vs UP (Men)
3 p.m. – Ateneo vs DLSU (Men)
Ateneo and De La Salle collide to cap first round action of the UAAP Season 81 men’s football tournament today (Thursday) at the FEU-Diliman pitch.
The Blue Eagles hope to sustain the momentum of their three-match winning streak in the 3 p.m. derby with the Green Archers.
Defending champion University of the Philippines, currently level with Ateneo and idle University of Santo Tomas in second place with 10 points, takes on vastly-improved Adamson University in the day’s other fixture at 1 p.m.
Far Eastern University topped the first round table with 15 points on four wins and three draws.
Victories by the Eagles and the Fighting Maroons will keep them within reach of the Tamaraws heading into the crucial second round.
After getting only a point in the first three matches, Ateneo finally got into the groove, as Jarvey Gayoso, Rupert Baña and Mark Nacional led their 13-goal outburst during that winning streak, while maintaining a clean sheet courtesy of ace goalkeeper AJ Arcilla.
Sitting outside the top four range with nine points, De La Salle tries to rebound from last Sunday’s 1-2 loss to FEU.
UP ended a three-match winless spell following a 2-1 victory over University of the East last Sunday.
The Maroons simply cannot take the Falcons for granted, as proved by the San Marcelino-based squad’s fighting 1-1 stalemate with the Tamaraws last week.
Winless last year, Adamson University has four points, all from draws.
