We’ve Signed the Treaty, It’s Time To Break Free!
SANLAKAS PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE PARIS AGREEMENT, COAL AND RENEWABLE ENERGY
Date: March 27, 2017 (Monday)
Time: 10:00 AM
Venue: Kenny Rogers Restaurant, Matalino St., Brgy. Teacher’s Village Quezon City
Last March 14, members of the Senate unanimously voted to pass the Paris Agreement. While having its own share of flaws, the Paris Agreement obligates party governments to commit to a 1.5 degrees Celsius global temperature by shifting from dirty fossil fuel energy to renewable energy alternatives. However, the Department of Energy’s Energy Plan has yet to reflect this commitment, and its troubling pronouncements on increasing indigenous coal extraction and turning to nuclear energy only raises additional concerns, rather than building on the Paris Agreement.
The previous week has yielded global actions calling for the abandonment of fossil fuels, as part of the international Break Free Movement. In continuation of these actions, Sanlakas and its allied organizations will be holding a press conference communicating its stand and scheduled activities for the rest of the week and in the days following it.
Speakers will be coming from Sanlakas, climate justice advocates from Philippine Movement from Climate Justice, Greenpeace, the Green Thumb Coalition, and coal-affected communities.
