‘The Goldbergs’ Spinoff Is Happening On ABC To Focus On Gym Teacher Rick Mellor

“The Goldbers” family comedy is getting a spinoff. The show , which takes place in the 1980s, will be following the story of gym teacher Rick Mellor (played by Bryan Callen). The spinoff will be taking place in the 1990s.

TV Line reports that Callen is attached to “The Goldberg” spinoff, which has yet to get its official title. The premise of the new comedy is that gym teacher Mellor, along with a few other high school teachers, will serve as father figures to children of another teacher.

Adam F. Goldberg, who created “The Goldbergs” based on his life, will be involved in writing the pilot episode. “The Goldbergs” has been a good performer among ABC’s comedy slate.

The Hollywood Reporter writes:

“The semi-autobiographical comedy has developed into a self-starter in its fourth season, where it launches the network’s critically praised Wednesday family-comedy block. Season four is averaging a 2.7 among adults 18-49 with seven days of DVR and 8.3 million total viewers. The series has already been sold in syndication to Tribune stations across the country, with Hulu scoring the series’ VOD window.”
