The CW is setting a crossover for its two popular series, “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals.” The network’s head, Mark Pedowitz, confirmed this during the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Sunday.

Fans of both shows have been wanting to see a crossover an over the years since “The Originals” spun off “The Vampire Diaries” in 2013, some small appearances from the cast on the later show took place. Nina Dobrev even guest starred on “The Originals,” albeit playing a different character and story that didn’t tie the show.

Now, Pedowitz confirmed it is finally happening this year. “[It’s] Not of the size and scope of we do for Arrow and Flash. They have to make sense [story-wise]. If they don’t make sense story-wise, don’t do it, don’t force it — the audience can tell,” via Entertainment Weekly.

The CW boss also said that it’s something that the network had been planning for a while and saw the opportunity when Stefan’s character “has to go on the run and seek safe haven, and lo and behold, New Orleans is that safe haven, and who does he come face-to face-with but Klaus  Mikaelson.”

Like other crossovers, it will take place in two episodes – one for “The Vampire Diaries,” and another in “The Originals.”

Despite the news, some are skeptical about the network’s plans for the shows as it has been moved to Friday nights, the death spot for time slots. But Pedowitz said, “The move to Friday night is not a move to exile [the shows],” per Zap2It. The network hopes that the movie will improve their Friday programming.

“The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals” return Jan. 29.
