New TV comedy “Dr. Ken” becomes the unexpected show to  receive the first full season order for the genre. The ABC Friday comedy, which stars Ken Jeong from “Community,” is also the fourth new TV show this season to get a pick-up, following “Blindspot” on NBC, “Quantico” on ABC, “Rosewood” on Fox. All three shows are from the drama/procedural genre.

“Dr. Ken” has not been well-received by critics, according to TV Media Insights, but it does fairly well in the ratings, averaging 6.6 million and  1.5 rating/6 share in adults 18-49 during Friday nights. The half-hour comedy, which was created by the show’s star along with Jared Stern and John Fox, also stars  Suzy Nakamura, Albert Tsai, Dave Foley, Jonathan Slavin and Tisha Campbell-Martin.

Meanwhile, other comedy shows that were expected to do better include “The Grinder” and “Grandfathered” on Fox. Both shows already received additional episode orders from the network, according to Variety, but have yet to be confirmed for a full season pick-up.

On the other hand, CBS’ “Life in Pieces” with its stellar ensemble have yet to receive favorable news from the network.

“Dr. Ken” airs every Friday nights, back to back “Last Man Standing” which has been holding steady in the time slot since 2011.
