MANILA — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged up to $3 million in grants to support the Philippines’ emergency response and humanitarian assistance following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which struck central regions of the country this week.

The typhoon has left 204 dead and 109 missing, prompting widespread devastation and the declaration of a state of national calamity by the Philippine government on Thursday.

ADB emergency support and commitment

In a statement released Friday, ADB President Masato Kanda said the bank is ready to provide up to $3 million in grant funds upon request from the Philippine authorities.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and the suffering caused by the recent series of disasters in the Philippines,” Kanda said.

“This immediate emergency support reflects ADB’s enduring commitment to the Filipino people, addressing both urgent humanitarian needs and long-term development goals,” he added.

Philippines braces for another storm

Meanwhile, forecasters have warned of another approaching storm, Fung-wong, expected to intensify into a Category 5 typhoon and make landfall on Sunday. Authorities and communities across the country are preparing for potential impacts while relief efforts continue for Typhoon Kalmaegi victims.

The ADB grant aims to help provide food, shelter, and medical assistance to affected communities, as well as to support recovery and rehabilitation initiatives. [Xinhua]
