‘Emily in Paris’ slammed for ‘heartless’ Chicago pizza joint joke
Netflix’s new show, Emily in Paris is gaining a lot of buzz from the critics and the French for the wrong reasons. Now, even a Chicago pizza joint is calling out the show for its “heartless” joke about the restaurant.
In the first episode of Emily in Paris, Emily (Lily Collins) tells one colleague that Chicagoans have pride about their deep-dish pizza. The co-worker, however, said that this was a disgusting food. It’s “like a quiche made of cement.”
Emily replied, “Oh, no. You must have gone to Lou Malnati’s.”
On Oct. 7, the actual Chicago pizza chain posted a statement on Instagram to slam the joke.
“We’ve been serving Chicago’s favorite Deep Dish since 1971. When Netflix’ Emily in Paris writers chose to take a shot at Chicagoans and our pizza to try to get a laugh, it felt heartless and not humorous in the midst of Covid-19,” owner Marc Manalti said.
Meanwhile, the French were the first to ridicule the series on the day of its release on Netflix. Emily in Paris established from the first episode that the French are mean snobs.
“It reduces the capital’s inhabitants to vile snobs sporting Birkin handbags who light up a cigarette the minute they’re out of the gym,” per MadmoiZelle.
Yet the new fun drama is a hit with subscribers, who are not happy about the cancellation of some Netflix series, including GLOW season 4. However, some might critics said viewers might actually be hate-watching the new series.
“Netflix sees more of a future in consumers hate-watching Emily in Paris (which was all over my timeline this weekend) than sincerely watching something like GLOW.”
The streamer has not yet confirmed if Emily in Paris will get a second season, amid the COVID-19 restrictions. The show closed with a cliffhanger that viewers felt need to be addressed in season 2.
