How oToBrite Is Extending Vision AI on Autonomous Rigs
Large autonomous machines have a wiring problem, and oToBrite just gave engineers a way around it. The Hsinchu, Taiwan-based Vision AI and camera supplier introduced the GMSL2 Repeater, a compact device that doubles rugged camera-to-SoC transmission range to 30 meters on heavy equipment.
The launch tackles a design headache that’s plagued builders of trailer-rear, boom-arm, harvesting-head, and perimeter cameras: Those positions routinely sit outside the roughly 15-meter reliable range of a standard GMSL2 link over automotive cabling, forcing engineers to either relocate the compute unit or redesign the cable architecture entirely. The GMSL2 Repeater eliminates both workarounds.

Signal Regeneration, Not Boosting, Doubles the Range
The repeater installs inline between the camera and the host, recovering the incoming GMSL2 signal in full before retransmitting a clean copy across a second link. That full recovery approach, rather than simple analog signal boosting, is what extends the link to a full 30 meters while adding under 1 microsecond of latency.
The device runs at 6Gbps with one GMSL2 input and one GMSL2 output on FAKRA Type Z connectors, and it draws power over the same coax cable as the camera, meaning no separate power supply is needed. Engineers also get a compact footprint to work with: The unit measures just 34.6 by 36 by 19 millimeters and installs permanently on the machine.
Built for the outdoors, the repeater carries an IP69K rating when its FAKRA connector is mated to a cable connector rated to the same standard, allowing it to withstand high-pressure washdown. It also operates across a wide temperature range, from minus 40 to 85 degrees Celsius, and draws up to 1.3 watts, excluding camera power.
A Decade of Automotive-Grade Experience Behind It
oToBrite isn’t new to this space. The company has spent more than a decade supplying automotive-grade cameras and Vision AI systems for production vehicle programs and autonomous machine fleets, working with automotive, off-highway, and robotics companies across the United States, Japan, and Europe.
The GMSL2 Repeater’s primary applications span heavy construction, mining, agricultural, and forestry equipment, as well as long-haul trucking. Outdoor autonomous mobile robots and unmanned ground vehicles round out the list — a segment oToBrite expects to lean on the technology more as those platforms grow larger and move into harsher environments.
The repeater also extends the reach of oToBrite’s existing GMSL2 camera lineup, which ranges from 1 to 8 megapixels and includes plug-and-play adapter kits for NVIDIA Jetson platforms. That gives system builders the option to source cameras, the compute connection, and the long-distance link for a large machine from a single automotive-grade supplier.
