The Trump Project Freedom Strait of Hormuz initiative is set to begin Monday morning, May 4, Middle East time, as President Donald Trump announced that the United States will escort neutral commercial vessels safely through one of the world’s most strategically vital maritime corridors. Trump framed the move as a humanitarian mission aimed at assisting international ships trapped by escalating regional conflict.

Calling the operation “Project Freedom,” Trump said multiple nations had requested U.S. intervention to help their vessels navigate through the restricted Strait of Hormuz, where ongoing Middle East instability has disrupted global shipping.

“Countries from all over the World… have asked the United States if we could help free up their Ships,” Trump said on Truth Social, emphasizing that many affected nations were neutral parties caught in a broader geopolitical confrontation.

Trump added that many stranded vessels are reportedly facing shortages of food, sanitation resources, and essential supplies, increasing the urgency of the mission.

Trump Project Freedom Strait of Hormuz raises military stakes

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil and trade chokepoints, handling a substantial percentage of global energy shipments. Any disruption in the region carries immediate consequences for international trade, fuel prices, and geopolitical stability.

Trump warned that any interference with U.S.-guided shipping convoys would be met with forceful action.

“If this Humanitarian process is interfered with, that interference will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully,” Trump stated.

The announcement significantly raises the stakes in the broader U.S.-Iran conflict, potentially increasing direct military engagement risks even as diplomatic channels remain active.

Iran reviews U.S. response as peace proposal tensions persist

Trump’s Project Freedom announcement came as Iran confirmed it had received and was reviewing Washington’s response to Tehran’s 14-point peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the proposal was focused solely on war cessation and did not address nuclear negotiations.

Despite that, Trump expressed skepticism over the plan’s viability, stating he “can’t imagine” the proposal being acceptable.

The launch of Project Freedom signals that while diplomacy remains under discussion, Washington is prepared to act militarily to secure global shipping routes. The operation could become a defining moment in both Trump’s Middle East strategy and broader international trade security. [Xinhua]
