The Department of Science and Technology–Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) officially opened the 2026 National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE), turning a nationwide search into a platform that pushes Filipino innovations closer to real-world application.

The event brings together the country’s most promising inventors, giving them visibility, recognition, and access to support systems designed to move their ideas beyond prototypes. It reinforces the growing role of Filipino innovations in shaping industries and communities.

From an initial pool of 764 entries screened through the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit by Cluster (ClusteRICE) 2025, only 28 finalists advanced to the national stage. The selection highlights both the depth of local talent and the urgency of bringing these innovations into practical use.

The NICE platform bridges the gap between invention and adoption, connecting innovators with opportunities for commercialization, partnerships, and wider market reach. It serves as a critical step in strengthening the country’s innovation ecosystem.

National platform accelerates Filipino innovation growth

To formally introduce the finalists, DOST-TAPI opened the NICE 2026 exhibits to the public, showcasing technologies developed across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. These innovations highlight solutions designed to address real-world challenges in various sectors.

The competition spans five major categories, including Outstanding Invention, Utility Model, Industrial Design, Creative Research, and Student Creative Research. Entries are evaluated based on impact, readiness for adoption, and clarity of presentation, with research categories also emphasizing originality and market potential.

Winners stand to receive cash prizes of up to PHP 300,000, along with recognition that opens doors to broader exposure. More importantly, they gain access to programs that support intellectual property protection, pre-commercialization, and technology transfer.

This structured support ensures that Filipino innovations are not only recognized but also guided toward sustainable growth and real-world application. It strengthens the pathway from idea generation to market entry.

Partnerships strengthen innovation ecosystem

A key highlight of NICE 2026 is the signing of a data-sharing agreement with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), aimed at streamlining access to intellectual property services. This initiative helps inventors secure their ideas while connecting them to government support more efficiently.

In addition, collaboration with MURATA introduces co-financing opportunities for technologies ready to scale. This partnership addresses funding gaps and supports innovators in transitioning from prototype to full commercialization.

The event also recognized International Inventor Awardees, showcasing how Filipino innovations can thrive globally when supported by strong networks. These innovators are part of accredited organizations that foster collaboration and continuous development.

DOST-TAPI emphasized that building strong inventor communities plays a vital role in sustaining innovation and expanding opportunities for Filipino creators in international markets.

As NICE 2026 continues, the exhibits remain open to the public, providing a space for engagement among innovators, industry leaders, and policymakers. The event encourages collaboration and knowledge exchange to further strengthen the innovation landscape.

The closing program will recognize the top winners across all categories, with first-prize recipients set to receive national recognition. The initiative underscores the country’s commitment to advancing Filipino innovations and supporting the next generation of inventors.
