Gibson Thunderbird Bass returns to the spotlight as the iconic American instrument brand unveils its latest version of the legendary model, now available worldwide in Ebony and Tobacco Burst Perimeter finishes.
Originally introduced in 1963, the Thunderbird stood out immediately for its bold and unconventional design. Created by automotive designer Ray Dietrich, the same mind behind the Gibson Firebird, the bass featured a striking asymmetrical body that became one of the most recognizable shapes in music history.
Now, Gibson is bringing that legacy forward with a modernized Thunderbird that stays true to its roots while offering improved performance for today’s players.
Classic design meets modern performance
The new Gibson Thunderbird Bass maintains its signature Reverse body shape, crafted from solid mahogany and highlighted by a raised center section that pays tribute to its original neck-through construction.
Early Thunderbird models made history as the first Gibson basses to feature a nine-ply neck-through-body design and a longer 34-inch scale length. While the latest version adopts a glued-in set mahogany neck, it retains the fast SlimTaper profile for smooth playability and comfort.
The instrument also features an updated Non-Reverse style headstock, designed to offer a more familiar tuning experience for modern musicians.
Hardware upgrades further enhance the bass, including Hipshot Ultralite Mini Clover tuners for better balance and tuning precision, along with a Hipshot Supertone bridge that allows full intonation control and adjustable string height.

True to its name, the Gibson Thunderbird Bass delivers a powerful low-end sound driven by two EB Bass Humbucker pickups.
These high-output pickups provide deep punch, clarity, and dynamic range, making the instrument suitable for a wide range of musical styles. Independent volume controls allow players to blend tones seamlessly, while a master tone knob adds further flexibility in shaping the sound.
The bass is finished with the signature three-ply white pickguard featuring the iconic Thunderbird logo, reinforcing its classic identity.
Each unit comes with a Gibson hardshell case, offering protection for musicians whether on tour, in the studio, or storing the instrument long-term.
