Hokkaido-based band First Love is Never Returned has kicked off 2026 with a fresh single, “WHAT’S UP?”, accompanied by a visually striking music video. The release also comes with the announcement of guest artists for the band’s first-ever two-man tour.

Led by vocalist Kazuki Ishida, who honed his skills in New York, the five-piece group has steadily carved a niche by blending R&B grooves with pop and indie sensibilities. Ishida’s expressive voice remains at the heart of their genre-crossing sound.

Last year marked a turning point for the band. With a new label partnership and appearances at major festivals like SWEET LOVE SHOWER, FLiNR sold out one-man shows in Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo, building momentum ahead of this new chapter.

Arata Yamamoto’s first title track contribution

Guitarist and chorus member Arata Yamamoto takes center stage in “WHAT’S UP?” as the primary writer and composer, marking his debut in crafting a title track. Drawing inspiration from loop-based music, the song captures the cyclical rhythms of everyday life while merging alternative and pop influences.

The music video amplifies this concept, produced by fellow Hokkaido native Yosuke Yamaguchi (Koe Inc.) and directed by rising filmmaker Kengo Hanada. Through cinematic visuals, it portrays daily life and emotional patterns, translating the song’s reflective themes into striking imagery.

Tour plans and personal reflections

“This is our first new song after a short break,” Ishida shared. “We’re still living in Sapporo, juggling regular jobs, and making music amidst our routines. ‘WHAT’S UP?’ reflects those honest experiences.”

The upcoming two-man tour promises fans the excitement of live-stage chemistry the band has always cherished. “Growing up in live houses, we loved the energy that comes from sharing the stage with other artists. We want everyone to feel that,” Ishida said.

For First Love is Never Returned, 2026 represents a fresh beginning. With a new single, music video, and tour, the band aims to continue evolving while inviting fans to join them on their journey.
