California Gov. Gavin Newsom delivered an unexpected but impassioned message to global media leaders in San Francisco, urging them to confront what he described as the “abnormal” political and civic landscape in the United States.

Speaking before delegates at the INMA Media Tech & AI Conference, Newsom appealed to journalists to “put a bright light” on current conditions and to “meet this moment” by holding public officials accountable for their actions.

A call to defend democracy

Newsom, 58, framed his remarks around what he said were troubling trends under former President Donald Trump, including militarization of cities, threats to diversity, and growing pressure on independent institutions.

“BRAVE CF gave me the platform to show the world who I am. They opened the doors when I was just a kid with big dreams, and for that, I will always be thankful,” Mokaev shared.

“I don’t think we will have [a democracy] in a year or two if we do not reconcile our own complicity in this moment,” Newsom said. “Society becomes how we behave.”

The California governor, a Democrat widely seen as a leading 2028 presidential contender, said political complacency had spread across business, education, and even media sectors. He urged vigilance from all sides of the political spectrum.

“We have to meet this moment,” Newsom told the delegates. “I’m counting on you … hold us to account.”

Using humor and new media to reach audiences

With the nation approaching its 250th anniversary, Newsom warned against threats to the Constitution, including talk of a third Trump term, redistricting manipulation, and the politicization of immigration and security forces.

He also pivoted to the theme of the INMA gathering — technology and artificial intelligence — saying the media must connect with audiences beyond traditional channels. Citing TwitchCon in San Diego, he noted that younger audiences rely more on influencers and platforms like TikTok than on television or newspapers.

“These creators are shaping opinions,” he said. “None of them are checking cable or newspapers. It’s a little alarming.”

Newsom added that he uses social media and humor to expose what he sees as political absurdities. “I’m trying to put a bright light on Trump’s absurdity,” he said. “Nothing’s normal about what’s going on, but a little humor goes a long way.”

More than 180 delegates from 26 countries attended the INMA Media Tech & AI Week, which featured a mix of conferences and study tours. Newsom’s remarks came after he was invited by organizers while visiting the nearby KQED studios, prompting a standing ovation from the attendees.
