WIPO and GGJ launch Next Great IP Jam to highlight the role of IP in game development.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Global Game Jam (GGJ) are teaming up for the Next Great IP Jam, a virtual event that will run from Oct. 9 to 27, 2025. The competition will engage young developers worldwide in designing games with franchise potential while learning how intellectual property (IP) can protect their ideas.

Targeting creators between 15 and 35, the jam pushes participants to think beyond gameplay and into long-term branding, merchandising, and commercialization. Expert-led sessions will cover copyright, trademarks, patents, and design rights, ensuring developers understand how to secure their content from the earliest stages.

WIPO and GGJ highlight importance of IP in gaming

Organizers say the event is designed to simulate the full IP commercialization chain. WIPO’s Todd Reves emphasized that video games are “a treasure trove of intellectual property,” with protectable elements ranging from code and characters to music and merchandising.

Global Game Jam executive director Maria Burns Ortiz said too many developers neglect IP until problems arise. “Next Great IP Jam will show developers why this is something you should be thinking about as soon as you start brainstorming, and we’ll make it fun,” she said.

Winners to receive mentorship and industry exposure

The jam is part of WIPO’s IP and Youth Empowerment Strategy (IP-YES!), aimed at sparking awareness among young creators and entrepreneurs. Beyond competition, it provides a platform for skill-building and networking to help projects scale into sustainable ventures.

Regional winners will be announced the week of Nov. 17, 2025, with prizes that include mentorship from industry leaders and opportunities to showcase their work to global audiences.
