Sidi Ould Tah to take office as African Development Bank president
On September 1, 2025, Sidi Ould Tah will officially assume the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB), succeeding Akinwumi Adesina. Elected on May 29, 2025, with 76.18% of the vote, Tah becomes the first Mauritanian to hold this influential position in Africa’s economic landscape.
A ceremony under the banner of diplomacy and African expertise
Tah’s election highlights the success of Mauritanian diplomacy and the unified support of African nations. His candidacy benefitted from multiple factors: the 2024 rotating African Union presidency under Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, regional and international diplomatic mobilization, and strong ties with Arab League countries, developed during Tah’s tenure at BADEA (Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa) from 2015 to 2025. Under his leadership, BADEA enhanced its credit ratings and significantly expanded its impact on Africa’s economic development.
Tah now faces the challenge of mobilizing new sources of financing for the AfDB, especially following the withdrawal of US$555 million in U.S. aid from the African Development Fund. His extensive experience and global network are expected to strengthen the Bank’s capacity for development financing, structural transformation, and the promotion of Africa’s economic sovereignty.
