Pope Francis’ Health Update: Doctors say his condition remains serious but not life-threatening

Doctors overseeing Pope Francis’ treatment have confirmed that while his current medical condition is not life-threatening, he remains at risk. The 88-year-old pontiff has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital since last week after a worsening case of bronchitis led to severe complications.

Doctors Assess the Situation

Sergio Alfieri, the head of the pope’s medical team, provided an update on Friday, stating that while Francis is not currently in danger, he has not yet reached full recovery.

“If the question is, ‘Is he out of danger?’ the answer is, ‘No,’” Alfieri said. “But if you then ask us if, at this moment, his life is in danger, the answer is [also], ‘No.’”

Despite his health struggles, the pope has maintained his sense of humor. Alfieri recalled greeting him as “Holy Father” during a visit to his hospital suite, to which Francis replied, “Holy Son.”

Medical Complications and Treatment

Francis’ condition has been further complicated by a diagnosis of double pneumonia and a bacterial, viral, and fungal infection. Doctors have placed him on an advanced drug regimen and supplemental oxygen when needed, though he is not on a ventilator.

A major concern is the potential for sepsis—a life-threatening complication that occurs when an infection spreads to the bloodstream. However, Alfieri confirmed there is no current evidence that this has occurred.

While the pope remains under close medical supervision, he has been able to get out of bed and continue some of his work. Doctors anticipate he will stay at the hospital for at least another week.

Speculation on Papal Resignation

Given his hospitalization, speculation has arisen regarding whether Pope Francis might step down from his role as the leader of the Catholic Church. His predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, resigned in 2013, marking the first papal resignation in six centuries.

Francis himself has addressed this possibility in the past, stating in a memoir that stepping down would only be an option in the event of a severe physical incapacity. He also confirmed in 2022 that he had written a resignation letter early in his papacy in case medical issues prevented him from fulfilling his duties.

Global Prayers for the Pope’s Recovery

The Catholic faithful around the world have been urged to pray for Pope Francis’ health. In the Philippines, a special hour-long prayer session was held for him at Manila Cathedral on Friday. The pope’s historic 2015 visit to the country drew an estimated crowd of six million people.

On Saturday, Catholics are expected to gather outside Gemelli Hospital for the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter—a significant day that commemorates the authority Jesus bestowed upon the pope.

As Pope Francis continues his recovery, the global Catholic community remains hopeful and united in prayer for his well-being.
