The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated as a Russian drone attack injured at least six people in Kyiv, damaging several buildings and tram tracks, according to Kyiv City Military Administration head Serhii Popko.

Other Ukrainian regions also suffered assaults. In Dnipropetrovsk, artillery, rockets, and drones damaged homes and a medical center, Governor Serhiy Lysak reported. Meanwhile, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted Russian drones in the Cherkasy and Mykolaiv regions overnight, showcasing the country’s continued efforts to protect its territories.

Russia Responds with Counterclaims

Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Wednesday that it destroyed a Ukrainian drone over the Kursk region. Additionally, Bryansk’s regional governor reported the downing of two Ukrainian drones, stating there were no casualties or damage.

Zelenskyy’s Call for Unity in 2025

In his New Year’s Eve address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his determination to strengthen Ukraine in 2025 and work towards ending the war.

“May 2025 be our year. The year of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy stated. “We know that peace will not be given to us as a gift, but we will do everything to stop Russia and end the war.”

The president emphasized the importance of resilience and unity, urging Ukrainians to strive for a strong and respected nation both on the battlefield and in diplomatic efforts.

Territorial Changes Amid Conflict

Data from the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War revealed that Ukraine lost approximately 4,000 square kilometers of ground in 2024, primarily in the east, compared to seven times less in 2023. However, Ukraine also captured several hundred square kilometers of Russian territory in Kursk, underlining the fluid nature of the conflict.

A Nation’s Resolve

As Ukraine enters 2025, the country remains steadfast in its fight for sovereignty and peace. With President Zelenskyy’s vision for a stronger Ukraine, the coming year holds the promise of renewed efforts to end the war and rebuild the nation. [VOA News]
