NHMC celebrates 2024 National Film Registry Selections, highlights Latine and BIPOC representation

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) proudly celebrates the films selected for the 2024 Library of Congress National Film Registry, which highlights cinematic works that define America’s culture, identity, and history. This year’s selections underscore the transformative power of storytelling in amplifying underrepresented voices and preserving them for future generations.

Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of NHMC, emphasized the significance of showcasing Latine, Indigenous, and broader BIPOC stories in shaping the nation’s collective narrative.

“At NHMC, we firmly believe that storytelling is a powerful tool to reclaim narratives about who we are, highlighting why our communities’ perspectives and experiences matter. The inclusion of films that showcase Latine, Indigenous, and broader BIPOC stories cements their place in history, shaping the future of filmmaking,” said Castillo.

Celebrating Latine and Diverse Stories

This year’s registry honors Latine films such as Up in Smoke, American Me, Mi Familia, and Spy Kids. These films celebrate authentic storytelling, showcasing the vibrant and complex narratives of the Latine community.

The registry also recognizes other impactful works featuring BIPOC talent, including:

  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
  • Ganja & Hess
  • Uptown Saturday Night
  • Powwow Highway

These selections reflect the growing recognition of diverse storytelling’s enduring impact on audiences and filmmakers alike.

The Power of Representation in Film

For Castillo, the 2024 registry selections symbolize more than cinematic milestones—they represent a cultural shift toward inclusivity and empowerment.

“These selections are a testament to the enduring power of representation and diverse storytelling to inspire, educate, and transform,” Castillo said.

As a member of the United States Library of Congress National Film Preservation Board, Castillo remains committed to ensuring that underrepresented stories gain visibility and recognition in future registries.

NHMC’s Ongoing Mission

The NHMC continues to champion diversity and inclusion in media, advocating for authentic representation in Hollywood and beyond. The coalition’s support for the National Film Registry aligns with its mission to amplify Latine voices and push for equity in storytelling.

With films like Mi Familia and Spy Kids now preserved as part of America’s cinematic legacy, NHMC hopes to inspire the next generation of creators to share stories that celebrate their heritage and experiences.
