Chapter 14: A Distance Grows
Margaret found herself drifting, trying to focus on her day-to-day life, but her thoughts kept returning to Johnny. Every time she replayed their last conversation by the lake, she felt that undeniable connection. But in the days that followed, Johnny had grown strangely distant, his calls and messages fading until there was nothing but silence. She told herself he might just need space, but deep down, she sensed something more.
One afternoon, Margaret finally decided to check in on him. She made her way to his home, her heart pounding with a mixture of worry and hope. But when she reached his doorstep, it was Lisa who opened the door, her expression a mixture of surprise and caution.
“Margaret,” Lisa greeted her, her tone polite but guarded.
“I wanted to see Johnny. I… I hadn’t heard from him,” Margaret said, the uncertainty in her voice clear.
Lisa paused, hesitating, before giving a small nod. “He’s been having a rough time. His condition… it’s worsened recently.” Her eyes softened with a hint of sympathy, yet a subtle message lingered in her gaze: I’m here now.
Margaret felt a pang in her chest, but she nodded, not wanting to intrude. As she turned to leave, she heard Lisa’s voice again. “I know Johnny appreciates your friendship,” Lisa said, her words careful. “But right now, he needs rest.”
With a heavy heart, Margaret walked back to her car, feeling more lost than ever. She wondered if she’d misread everything between them—if she’d been selfish in wanting him close when he was struggling. She knew Lisa wasn’t wrong to step in, and maybe, Johnny needed her more than anyone right now.
Over the next few weeks, Margaret watched from a distance as Johnny and Lisa grew closer. She tried to focus on her relationship with David, who sensed something was weighing on her. He approached her gently, asking if everything was alright, and she found herself pulling back, unable to share the full truth.
At night, she thought of Johnny, wondering if he ever thought of her. The few times she saw him from afar, he was with Lisa, and she could see the tenderness in their interactions, a closeness that reminded her of what she could never truly share with him. It became clear that, even in his pain, he was leaning on the one person who had been with him through everything.
One late evening, Johnny sat beside Lisa on their porch, his gaze fixed on the stars. He felt a pang of guilt for the way he’d distanced himself from Margaret, but he also knew he needed to focus on what mattered most right now. The silent love that had simmered between him and Margaret had only complicated things, leaving him torn.
“Johnny?” Lisa’s voice broke through his thoughts. She looked at him, concern written across her face. “You’ve been quiet lately. I want you to know… whatever’s on your mind, you can share it with me.”
He sighed, feeling the weight of his choices. “It’s nothing, Lisa. Just… thinking about everything we’ve been through.”
She reached out, placing a hand on his. “I know you’re going through a lot. But I’m here, and I’ll always be here.”
In that moment, Johnny felt a surge of gratitude for her loyalty, her unwavering love, and her strength. She had been by his side through so much, and even now, she stood with him, supporting him in ways no one else could. For the first time in weeks, he felt a sense of peace—a reminder of why he’d chosen to spend his life with her.
For Margaret, the distance between them was a painful, necessary reality. She tried to bury her feelings, tried to refocus on her future with David, but something within her felt forever changed. Seeing Johnny and Lisa together, she realized that sometimes, the love you feel isn’t always the love you’re meant to pursue. She had to let go, to find her own path, and let Johnny find his peace.
The realization was bittersweet, but it gave her strength. She would hold onto the memories they’d shared, the quiet moments by the lake, and the unspoken understanding that had blossomed between them. But it was time to step back, to let Johnny live the life he’d chosen, and to embrace the one she had left waiting for her.
