‘The Crown’ picks Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana for Season 5 & 6

Netflix’s The Crown is casting an Australian actress for the role of Princess Diana in season 5 and 6. Elizabeth Debicki will take over the part for Emma Corin, who will be introduced as the Princess of Wales in season 4.

Debicki will join Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret. No word yet on who will play the new Prince Charles, a role currently played by Josh O’Connor.

The actress’ other acting credits include starring in The Night Manager and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Debicki is also in the cast of Christoper Nolan’s high profile movie Tenet.

“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one,” Debicki said in a statement.

Meanwhile, fans have only gotten a glimpse of Corin as Princess Diana on the set. In February, the actress was spotted filming in Manchester, England to depict the royal’s 1989 visit to New York. That year, Princess Diana went to a homeless halfway house and met with AIDS patients. Corin was also seen on the set location last October with O’Connor.

The Crown was supposed to end with five seasons. However, creator Peter Morgan decided to push the series to six seasons.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Morgan said. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

The Crown will end just before the addition of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle into the family. Meanwhile The Crown season 4 is expected to launch on Netflix in late 2020.
