Jim Carrey’s career in Hollywood accelerated after the movie The Mask in the 1990s. The actor is reportedly playing the part again as he makes a special came as the green-faced hero in Space Jam 2.

According to We Got This Covered, Carrey is set to do some voice work as The Mask for its CGI recreation. Apparently, he will play as one of the referees of the basketball game featuring LeBron James.

Sequel questions were raised early this year after Carrey’s latest movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, hit theaters. Carrey played the villain in the movie that showcased his extremely rambunctious persona.

Apparently, Carrey once said that he’ll only do a sequel to The Mask if a visionary filmmaker will be up for it as well. There are rumors that Warner Bros is setting up a franchise with the actor but it has yet to progress to a full-blown project.

The Mask was a 1994 superhero movie directed by Charles Russell. Based on a comic book series from Dark Horse Comics, the film also starred Cameron Diaz.

In the film, Carrey played Stanley Ipkiss, a down on his luck banker who discovers a mask that turns him into a superhero gangster. The actor earned a Golden Globe nomination for playing the character. A sequel titled Son of the Mask hit theaters in 2005 with Jamie Kennedy but received less box office recognition than the Carrey movie.

Meanwhile, is set for release in theaters in 2021 with Malcolm D. Lee as director. Aside from the basketball superstar, the movie also stars Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green.

James will play himself in the sequel similar to Michael Jordan, who starred in the 1996 movie. The latter was supposed to be in Space Jam 2 as well but decided to not return for the sequel.

Space Jam 2 was announced as in development since 2014. James is also producing the movie under his film studio SpringHill Entertainment. Production started in the summer of 2019 and is now in its post-production.
