The “Divergent” franchise has lost its leading lady. Shailene Woodley, who plays Tris in the movie, has confirmed she won’t be joining the production after it was announced that the project will become a TV show.
“Divergent” was supposed to release its final chapter, “Ascendant” this March but it’s third offering “Allegiant” did not fare well at the box office in 2016. This prompted the studio to continue the franchise as a TV show and rumors are rife that the main stars didn’t agree with where the production was heading.
“No,” Woodley said, via Vanity Fair. “I’m not going to be on the television show.”
“Ascendant” is currently being redeveloped for the small screen and it’s unclear if the franchise’s other stars, Miles Teller, Theo James and Ansel Elgort, would be joining the series. Many of them have earlier expressed that they signed up for a movie project, not a TV show.
Teller told Variety back in August that no one has approached him about the series. He learned of the changes to the franchise online.
Lionsgate produced the futuristic series about young adult revolutionist. “Divergent” is based on a book written by Veronica Roth. The first installment ran in theaters in 2014. The second movie “Insurgent” followed a year later.
Meanwhile, Woodley is currently promoting her upcoming HBO drama “Big Little Lies” with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. The limited series is set to premiere on the cable network this month.
