As expected, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” was the biggest winner at the Tony Awards this year. The Broadway musical went home with 11 top awards including best actor, best director, best score and best musical. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who created the “Hamilton” and accepted the award for best score, offered a sonnet for the victims of the Orlando shooting.

Prior to the Tony Awards, the mood was already somber as  a terror attack took over a nightclub filled with gay and lesbian patrons in Orlando, Florida. At least 50 people were reported dead and 53 others were wounded. The speech during the Tonys were all delivered with respects to the victims. Even James Corden, the night’s host, who is usually upbeat and funny, opened Tonys with a somber statement. “Your tragedy is our tragedy … hate will never win,” Corden said to the families of the victims, per the Los Angeles Times.

“Hamilton” swept the Tonys as it is a musical that veered off the traditional Broadway presentation. It  tells the story of America’s history, but it is fused with pop, hip-hop, rap and R&B in its music. The showstopper was also cited for its technical presentation, where it also reaped many awards.
